Bacterial infections occur when bacteria/toxins enter the body. This could be ingested or through an open wound or orifice.

Once the bacteria has entered and is inside the fish it multiplies triggering a response from the immune system. In some instances, the immune system is sufficient and combats the infection with no intervention being required, however sometimes the immune system will require support.

Taking into account the type of bacterial infection, it may be contagious and could potentially spread throughout the pond, however it may not be contagious at all. This can only be determined by identifying the ailment, the diagnosis will also allow the pond medic to ensure that the fish receive the most effective treatment that will combat the bacteria most efficiently.

The bacterial growth within the body can cause toxins that can impact the cells directly.

Dependent on the type of illness the bacteria may have caused, the treatment will vary. The infection as with humans can either be internal or external. Both of which will require interventions if the fish is unable to fight off the infection alone.

The treatments for bacterial infections are usually liquid or powder treatment added to the pond or a topical treatment for an infected external illness. In worst case it may require bacterial antibiotics.

Do not delay call the pond medic today.
