Normal vs. Abnormal Behaviour of your Fish

In order to treat the poorly fish we need to be able notice what is usually the first stage of illnesses. This is behavioural changes within the fish. To differentiate between the fish behaviours here are a few things to bear in mind.

Happy healthy fish usually:

  • Swim at a normal pace in a somewhat rhythmic pattern.
  • Act alert and are aware of their surroundings.
  • Are excited and energetic at feeding times.

The best time to spot behavioural changes in your pond fish is at feeding times.

Abnormal behaviour can indicate many things for the fish. This does not always mean that the fish are ill:

  • The fish may rest to excess, appearing lethargic and indifferent at feeding times.
  • The fish may rest on their sides as opposed to a more natural position.
  • The fins may be clamped tightly against the body.
  • They are unresponsive to food.
  • The fish appear to be near the surface of the water gasping for air.
  • They have become erratically behaved.

    • Stop/start swimming
    • Jumping
    • Flashing
    • Scraping their bodies on the surfaces available
